Polish language consist of about 20 thousand more words than english. The English translation will be empty and expressionless.Translating one to other is a nonsense.

@Małgorzata Gawlik - The subtitles become a matter of record, but since we don't have the possibility to verify contributed translations internally, we're simply not able to crowdsource subtitles. Thanks to you (and many others') for the offer, though - and thanks for watching!

Polish national television "TVP" didn't even broadcast this lecture, because of the anxiety that Olga Tokarczuk could say something about the political situation in our country, breaking law, changing constitution and censorship. And that is... censorship at its finest. The TV's chef said it was because of technical, impassable difficulties.

I know many people asked before, but please, please add English subtitles. The speech is one of the things that just have to be shared with everyone, and nowadays a youtube video with subtitles is one of the best mediums for that.

Beautiful speach. I realy don't get why there is no english subtitles on this movie (direclty)not just only transcription (which is not the same for people who don't know even how to follow polish speach). I gues is doable if any youtube video can have it. That's definitely not "any" video!

"When I later asked her about that sadness-which I did on numerous occasions, always prompting the same response-my mother would say that she was sad because I hadn’t been born yet, yet she already missed me. “How can you miss me when I’m not there yet?” I would ask. I knew that you miss someone you’ve lost, that longing is an effect of loss. “But it can also work the other way around,” she answered. “Missing a person means they’re there.” Unborn baby Olga was a person according to her mother, it sounds PRO LIFE.

  44. Mari Ti

    Mari TiMiesiąc temu

"my mother would say that she was sad because I hadn’t been born yet, yet she already missed me." In her words an unborn child of her mother to her mother felt like an awaited human - her mother was a mother of a child to be born - thank you Ms Tokarczuk.

  45. Minty Cora

    Minty CoraMiesiąc temu

Wouldn't say so. To me at least it seems like she was longing for a child. Not for her. The act of missing someone we don't know yet is strange, because we only miss the idea of a person or an idea of a feeling of being around another person. Sometimes it's just being lonely. For the matter of fact, her mother could be also sad for another reason but didn't want her to know

Suprisingly very catholic speech. Longing for the unborn child in womb, sugesting that good and evil exist. "Lack of narrations for modern and even present times". I can see some analogy to Jan Paweł II and his individual dignity when she says about first person narrator. Humanity is really inseparably connected with God.
